Newcastle Universities School of Marine Science and Technology is home to a globally renowned School of Naval Architecture and has supported Blyth Tall Ship with engineering and technical advice from the inception of the charity. In recent times Ducan Boyter supervised by Professor Richard Birmingham conducted his Masters dissertation on innovative and alternative survivability and stability solutions for Southern Ocean sailing that are sympathetic to the heritage wooden structures of 100-year-old Tall Ship. The results have ensured that the Williams Expedition has a robust a highly innovative safety solution for navigating blue water. Duncan received a 1st for his Masters!
Further support is being given in developing a new build Zulu class vessel for commercial development because of its speed below deck space for living in and offshore abilities. This is a fabulous ongoing collaboration and we are very grateful to Professor Richard Birmingham all they are giving.
